Review — A wonderful and very amusing illustrated ABC book, by the print maker KAWAKAMI Sumio (1895-1972), that details people and professions in English (Kawakami spent some time in the USA), each with a short text in Japanese, in Taisho-era Japan mixed with foreign elements (Kawakami amused himself a lot with the situations and clichés generated by the presence of foreigners in Japan) and illustrated with marvellous woodblock prints, the whole filled with incongruous and subtle humor. Meet Mamas, Night-birds, Gamblers, Jacks, Hatters, Chauffeurs, Thieves and Queens!
Misc. — First ed.: 1935.
